Italia: Or, the continuing adventures of tony, frank, and fred

Although our show is technically a-list, we like to give each individual show a loose theme. It makes things a little more stimulating for us, and it usually means we play a broader range of music. Well, those are our most defendable reasons, but honestly it is just really fun to come up with ridiculous justifications to play songs that we like. In any case, this week's theme was ITALY, by which we really meant, songs about guys named Tony. Or Frank. Or Catholics.

jonathan richman - rooming house on venice beach
pixies - tony's theme
ralph sheckel - tony gave a picnic
sonic youth - catholic block
witch - black saint
david vandervelde - can't see your face no more
beirut - postcards from italy
yo la tengo - ronnie
ill ease - ny, london, paris, tokyo, milan
david bowie - the gospel according to tony day
venetian snares - hungarian suicide song
story of the sea - stylish & romantic
lunapop - qualcosa di grande
brian eno - blank frank
rome - lunar white
andrew bird - st. francis reel
the twilight sad - walking for two hours
beirut - the canals of our city
erland oye - jolly music
the slats - ignatius
belle & sebastian - lord anthony
land of talk - street wheels
the sprites - george romero
menomena - rotten hell
art brut - the rusted guns of milan
bob dylan - the ballad of frankie lee & judas priest
billy joel - scenes from an italian restaurant

we really wanted to play akron/family's "italy" (an obvious choice), but alas, it was too long. i might put it up here later. ALSO, in a brilliant stroke of luck, we found the psa where the woman is seduced by her couch! well, michelle kelley found it actually. still brilliant. you can listen here.

yeah. pretty excellent. i actually put that entire psa cd on my computer, so i think i'll slowly upload them all. next up: sir parties-a-lot.
